About us

Simon Pocock · Author & independent publisher

Three Mice Books is Simon Pocock’s publishing project, created to bring the Campania 1943 series to readers.

Born in England in 1951, Simon moved to Italy in 1974. He graduated in Italian language and literature from the University of London, where he also completed a PhD in 1996 on the application of linguistic theory to education.

From 1975 he worked for the British Council as a language teacher, registrations manager and, later, examinations manager, leaving in 2007. Married with three children, he made Naples his home.

His interest in Southern Italy in 1943 began in 2000, after a chance encounter with a book about the Battle of Montelungo. What started as research for a novel grew into a documentary history of the region during the war.

Visits to towns across Southern Italy brought conversations with hundreds of people who remembered the war. Archival and library research followed in London, Rome, Washington, Freiburg, Naples and elsewhere in Italy and abroad.

Through Campania 1943, Simon shares the experience of discovering southern Italy in one of its darkest periods through the memories of those who lived through it.
